I make films and write about film.
I am excited to have been invited by Sean Redmond (RMIT University Melbourne) to contribute a piece for a special edition of the Alphaville Journal. For submission in September 2026, it concerns aspects of lighting in the wartime films of Powell and Pressburger.
I also continue to work on a videographic essay exploring 'The Sound of Music' (Robert Wise, 1965).
I presented a paper in May 2025 at the Real and Imagined Spaces conference in Zaragoza.
My book 'Women and Home in Cinema: Form, Feeling, Practice' is published by Palgrave as part of their 'Close Readings in Film and Television' series.
You can currently buy the book at a generous discount from the Architectural Association Bookshop (with thanks to the folks at Palgrave).
I have made several short films, two of which have won awards. I have also worked in film festival curation and curated film festivals.
Alongside my work in film I have performed and directed in theatre, with a particular interest in telling stories through shadow theatre, puppetry and opera. I studied shadow theatre at the London School of Puppetry, in Bamberg with Norbert Götz and in Turin with Controluce.
I have a PhD in Film from the University of Reading, an MA in Film from the University of Westminster, and a BA in Drama from the University of Manchester.
